Making the most of each drop

MAKING THE MOST OF EACH DROP

With continued stress on the margin, refiners all over the globe are focused on the “last drop.” So in order to maximize production and meet the growing demand, the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. partnered with Praxair to garner the benefits of a safe and reliable hydrogen and nitrogen gas supply.

Looking ahead

It was IndianOil’s largest investment on a single project to date — a 300,000 barrels-per-day greenfield refinery located at Paradip, Orissa on the eastern coast of India. The refinery was designed to meet the burgeoning energy demands of the Indian domestic market and the South-East Asian export market by processing lower-cost high sulfur and heavy crude oil. But to do so, they needed a reliable long-term supply of hydrogen and nitrogen.

“We are confident that Praxair, with its long experience in supporting the refining industry, will provide us with safe, reliable and efficient operations.”

Changing the standard

To meet the demand, Praxair built a 90-million-standard-cubic-feet-per-day hydrogen plant and a 500-ton-per-day nitrogen plant at the Paradip refinery. It was India’s first 100 mmscfd hydrogen project on a build, own and operate model. And the success of the project has motivated many refiners to reconsider their processes.

“Using state-of-the-art technology, Praxair is committed to playing a significant role in helping the refining industry globally to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations for transportation fuels today and in the future.”
